Basketball team University of Tartu
The University of Tartu basketball team is one of the oldest and most successful basketball teams in Estonia, with its history dating back to the 1950s.
As part of the University of Tartu Academic Sports Club, the men’s representative team plays under the banner of the University of Tartu in the highest club series – the Estonian-Latvian Basketball League and the Estonian championships. The aim of the team is to play basketball at a good level, give their students the opportunity to develop, and enable basketball players to combine top-level training with their studies.
The women’s representative team of the University of Tartu provides the best opportunities for playing at a good level, training, and studying at the university. The teams of all age groups in the basketball pyramid take part of the G4S Youth League, or the Estonian Youth Championships.
Over the last 20 years, the team has remained at the top of Estonian club basketball. They have played in the finals for many years and won the Estonian Championship title on seven occasions, most recently in the 2014/2015 season. The club has won bronze in the Baltic League three times – in the 2008/2009, 2013/2014, and 2016/2017 seasons. In the 2015/2016 season, they reached the Baltic League finals, where they lost to Šiauliai after a heated battle, winning silver medals.
Their best performance in the FIBA series was in the 2007/2008 season, when they played in the Final Four tournament. In the 2013/2014 season, they came very close to reaching the final tournament, but had to settle for a place in the quarter finals.
Throughout the years, legendary basketball players such as Ilmar Kullam, Heino Raudsik, Jaak Lipso, Arne Laos, August Sokk, and Aleksei Tammiste, as well as Jaak Aaviksoo, Toomas Tein, Priit Vene, and many other famous people have played in the University of Tartu basketball team.
G4S Estonia is proud to be part of their achievements and growth as a supporter.
