Fire safety

A thief leaves empty drawers behind, a fire takes those too. Think about this old saying…

In order to reduce the risk and to preserve the property, G4S offers you an option to purchase primary fire-fighting means for your home.

The popular means of fire prevention in Estonia is to use a smoke detector. On the other hand, this useful device can be of little help after the fire has already spread. This is why every home should have primary fire-fighting means.

Fire extinguisher

ABC powder-based extinguisher with a manometer – 1 kg, 2 kg, 6 kg.

Powder-based fire extinguishers are the most common extinguishers in Estonia. ABC powder-based extinguisher is intended for burning solids, flammable liquids, gases and electrical equipment under voltage of up to 1,000 V.

Powder-based fire extinguishers are popular due to their universal application,

A powder-based extinguisher is efficient and universal – it is suitable for most burning materials.

The advantages of a powder-based extinguisher are its good extinguishing capacity and ease of use – a smaller pocket of fire can be extinguished in an average of 5–10 seconds. By following the instructions stated on the extinguisher, it can be successfully used by the father, the housewife or the youngster of the family. A powder-based extinguisher is resistant to all weather conditions.

Still, the user of a powder-based extinguisher will have to take into account that the powder dust gets everywhere and can damage the property left intact by the fire. It is also useful to know that when extinguishing burning liquids, the powder doesn’t have any residual effect – a slightest flame or spark will ignite the fire in its previous size again.

The fire extinguisher must conform to the relevant standards, it must have a label in Estonian language and also a conformance certificate of the competent institution.

The good working order of fire extinguishers is ensured by regular inspection, verifying and maintenance.

The necessary frequency of inspecting the fire extinguisher depends on where it is kept. An extinguisher kept in special conditions (i.e. in a car, in humid rooms) must be inspected every year. Extinguishers kept in normal conditions must be inspected every other year.

Maintenance of powder-based fire extinguishers must be performed every 10 years and after every usage.

AS G4S Eesti performs inspection of fire extinguishers for prices starting from 50 EEK per extinguisher in case of an existing maintenance contract of an alarm system and on the condition that the inspection takes place simultaneously with the maintenance of the alarm system (per one extinguisher, regardless of its capacity).

Inspection of a pressurised fire extinguisher includes the following:

  • Inspection of the legibility of the label and if necessary then the replacement of the label;
  • Visual inspection of the regulating valve and the seal;
  • Inspection of the manometer or measuring the pressure;
  • Weighing of the extinguisher;
  • Verification of the flow of the extinguishing powder;
  • Inspection of the hose;
  • Exterior inspection of the housing;
  • Providing the inspection label of the extinguisher.

Locations of fire extinguishers:

  • A fire extinguisher must be placed vertically onto the fastening hook, into the clamp, onto the special base or into the locker, located near the entrance to the room or immediately at the workplace where the risk of fire is the most probable.
  • A fire extinguisher can be kept horizontally or in an inclined position in a vehicle, if it is impossible to keep it vertically and it is not forbidden in the user manual of the fire extinguisher.
  • A pressurised fire extinguisher must be located away from direct sunlight and at least 1 metre away from any heating equipment.
  • The fire extinguisher or a fire safety sign directing to the location of the fire extinguisher must be visible upon entering the room.
  • There must be free access to the fire extinguisher.

Usage:

  • Do not use the extinguisher against the wind.
  • Direct the extinguisher jet into the lower part of the flame.
  • Start extinguishing from the edges of the pocket of fire.
  • Cover the pocket of fire with the extinguishing substance by sweeping motions.
  • Avoid blowing the burning material around with the extinguisher jet.
  • Do not empty the extinguisher without need.
