Operation of the electric car charging network
-
Date: 31.01.2012
G4S and Ühisteenused will start operating the fast charging network for electric cars, built by ABB.
The world’s first national fast charging network for electric cars will be built by ABB, who won the relevant public procurement. G4S participated in the procurement tender as a subcontractor to ABB. The world’s first national network of charging stations will be completed during 2012.

“We will be providing operating services in cooperation between G4S and Ühisteenused,” said Alar Vasemägi, Member of Management Board of AS Ühisteenused. “Ühisteenused will be tasked with operating the management system of the charging network – concluding contracts with end users, issuing user cards, ensuring payments and reporting.” Vasemägi pointed out that this is largely similar to the current parking management systems, which are the forte of AS Ühisteenused. Ühisteensued will probably also be responsible for the primary maintenance of stations in Tallinn and Harju County.
G4S will be using its control centres to provide 24/7 end user support and instruction and, if necessary, organising vehicle assistance and transporting stranded passengers to the nearest charging station. G4S will naturally provide security and patrol services at the charging stations. According to Vasemägi, G4S will also be tasked with the primary maintenance of the stations in regional areas.
ABB concluded the contract for the construction of the charging station network with KredEx and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications before Christmas. According to Vasemägi, the subcontract with ABB will hopefully be concluded in January.
Pursuant to the contract, ABB will deliver approximately 200 fast chargers for electric cars, complete with the provision of operating services necessary for the installation, maintenance and management of the stations for five years. The chargers will be installed by roads with the highest traffic load and in all the settlements with more than 5,000 inhabitants. By estimation, the distance between the fast charging points installed on roads will be approximately 40-60 km. The cost of the contract for the construction of fast charging stations and the provision of operating services is 6.6 million EUR.
